Given that your average piano is only 88 keys, MIDI has a lot more options for note values than any analog instrument! Because MIDI is capable of many more values, engineers got creative with the corresponding note names (going all the way down to C-1). MIDI Numbers can be any value between 0 and 127, where 0 is equal to C-1 and 127 is equal to G9. Both Note On and Note Off messages are made 3 different components: Number, Value, and Channel.įor now, we'll focus on the Number part of each MIDI message.
